Real estate sales people generally make poor assistants. As a standard rule, I automatically disqualify any candidate with a strong sales background. I especially steer clear of anyone who claims that they were a top performing sales person. Don’t disqualify a good looking candidate because of their distance from your location before you talk to them. The candidate might be relocating or using a mailing address that is different from where they actually live. Ignore cover letters. Reading cover letters when you are trying to disqualify candidates is a huge waste of time. They are usually generic and rarely say anything important. Go straight to the resume and if you want to read the cover letter later once you decide that you like the candidate, go for it.
